The standard Njabini route reaches approximately 3,658 m, with around 18–19 km of hiking and roughly 1,150–1,200 m of elevation gain. The hike generally takes 7–10 hours, depending on fitness, weather and trail conditions.

šŸ“ Elephant Hill Day Hike from Nairobi

Duration: 1 Day
Starting point: Nairobi
Trailhead: Njabini Forest Station
Summit: Elephant Hill – 3,658 m
Distance: Approximately 18–19 km round trip
Hiking time: Approximately 7–10 hours
Difficulty: Challenging
Route: Njabini Forest Station → Bamboo Forest → Point of Despair → Elephant Hill Summit → Njabini

5:30 AM – Depart Nairobi

Early morning pickup from your hotel, residence or agreed meeting point in Nairobi. Drive toward Njabini in Nyandarua County, passing through the central highlands.

The drive to the trail area takes roughly 2–2½ hours, depending on the exact pickup location and traffic.

šŸ•— 7:30–8:00 AM – Arrive at Njabini

Arrive at the Njabini area and complete the necessary registration and preparations before proceeding to the trailhead.

Meet your hiking guide/ranger, organize your daypack, refill water bottles and receive a safety briefing.

🌲 8:00–9:00 AM – Forest Section

Begin the hike from approximately 2,500 m.

The first section passes through forest and relatively gentle terrain. It is a good opportunity to warm up gradually before the trail becomes considerably steeper.

šŸŽ‹ 9:00–11:30 AM – Bamboo Forest

The trail becomes steeper as you enter the bamboo zone.

This is one of the more demanding sections of the hike. Depending on recent weather, the trail can be muddy and slippery. The bamboo forest also provides a completely different environment from the open summit area.

Take regular short breaks, maintain a comfortable pace and stay together as a group.

🐘 11:30 AM–12:00 PM – Point of Despair

Reach the area commonly known as Point of Despair/Desperado, around 3,200–3,300 m.

This is an important rest point because the trail opens from the bamboo into the alpine moorland. You can begin to appreciate the views toward the surrounding Aberdare landscape and dams.

Take some time for water, snacks and photographs before continuing.

🌿 12:00–1:30 PM – Alpine Moorland & Final Ascent

Continue across the open moorland toward the upper slopes.

The vegetation changes noticeably, with tussock grass, giant heather and other high-altitude vegetation. The final section becomes rockier and more exposed, and the temperature can drop significantly.

The pace should remain steady rather than rushed.

šŸ”ļø 1:30–2:00 PM – Elephant Hill Summit

Reach the Elephant Hill summit at approximately 3,658 m.

Enjoy time at the summit for:

  • šŸ“ø Summit photographs
  • šŸŒ„ Panoramic Aberdare views
  • šŸ’§ Hydration and snacks
  • šŸ± Packed lunch
  • šŸ”ļø Views toward Mount Kinangop and the surrounding highlands
  • šŸŒ Clear-day views toward the Rift Valley and, depending on visibility, distant Mount Kenya

Allow approximately 30 minutes at the summit, depending on weather conditions.

ā¬‡ļø 2:00–5:00 PM – Descend to Njabini

Begin the descent using the same route.

The descent can be particularly demanding on the knees, especially on the rocky and muddy sections. Take care in the bamboo zone where the trail may be slippery.

Allow approximately 3–4 hours for the descent, depending on the group pace and conditions.

🚐 5:00 PM – Leave Njabini

Arrive back at the trailhead, freshen up and board the vehicle for the journey back to Nairobi.

šŸŒ† 7:30–8:30 PM – Arrive in Nairobi

Drop-off at your hotel, residence or agreed location in Nairobi.

🄾 What to Bring

  • Hiking boots with good grip
  • Waterproof jacket/rain gear

āš ļø Fitness & Safety

Elephant Hill is not an easy walk. Although it is a day hike, the combination of approximately 18–19 km distance, steep sections and more than 1,000 m of elevation gain makes it a challenging mountain day.

A guide and appropriate ranger arrangements should be confirmed in advance, and the group should be prepared to adjust the itinerary if weather or trail conditions deteriorate.
