🕐 Detailed Itinerary

05:30 AM – Pickup from Nairobi

Early morning pickup from your hotel, residence, or agreed meeting point in Nairobi.

Depart Nairobi and drive west along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway toward the Great Rift Valley. An early departure helps avoid Nairobi traffic and allows you to begin the hike while temperatures are more comfortable.

07:00–07:30 AM – Great Rift Valley Viewpoint

Make a short stop at the escarpment viewpoint, depending on traffic and timing.

Enjoy panoramic views over the Great Rift Valley and take photographs before continuing toward Mount Longonot.

07:30–08:00 AM – Arrival at Mount Longonot National Park

Arrive at the park entrance and complete the entry formalities.

You will have time to:

  • Register/pay park entry fees
  • Use the facilities
  • Prepare your hiking gear
  • Drink some water and have a light snack
  • Meet your hiking guide, if arranged

KWS advises visitors to carry drinking water, food and appropriate outdoor equipment.

🥾 08:00 AM – Begin the Hike

Start hiking from the park gate toward the crater rim.

The initial trail passes through open bushland and gradually becomes steeper as you climb toward the rim. The trail to the rim is approximately 3.1 km one way, with an elevation gain of roughly 600–630 m.

Estimated ascent: 1½–2 hours depending on fitness and pace.

Take regular short breaks, especially on the steeper sections.

🌋 10:00 AM – Reach the Crater Rim

Arrive at the crater rim and take time to rest and enjoy the spectacular scenery.

From the rim, you can see:

  • The volcanic crater
  • Lake Naivasha
  • The Great Rift Valley
  • Mount Suswa and surrounding landscapes
  • The surrounding ridges and valleys

Mount Longonot reaches 2,776 m above sea level.

For hikers who are physically fit, continue around the crater rim.

The full crater-rim loop is approximately 7.2 km, with several steep sections and undulating terrain. The complete gate–rim–circuit–gate hike is roughly 13–14 km, depending on the exact trail followed.

The rim circuit provides constantly changing views and is the recommended option for visitors who want the full Mount Longonot experience.

Important: The rim circuit is considerably more demanding than simply hiking to the crater rim.

🥾 1:00–2:00 PM – Descend to the Park Gate

After completing the crater circuit, begin the descent back to the park gate.

Take care on loose volcanic soil and steep sections, particularly when descending.

Expected total hiking time: approximately 5–6 hours, depending on pace, stops and trail conditions.
